True believers

I’ve been enjoying teaching Comparative Civilizations 12 this year, a rich combination of religion, mythology, folklore, and philosophy.  In our recent study of the Abrahamic religions, we viewed this fascinating TED talk by writer Lesley Hazleton, who describes herself as an “agnostic Jew”, and in this talk presents a bold and compelling thesis: doubt, far from being incompatable with faith, is in fact a prerequistite for faith.  Faith without doubt degenerates into fundamentalism.  I present here Hazleton’s intriguing talk, along with my own thoughts on fundamentalism which were partially inspired by her ideas.
